Head Spa – The latest buzz in beauty and spa industries in Japan – good for men and women
I know you take care of your skin, face, and teeth. What about your scalp?
We’ve never heard the term “head spa” in the U.S. In fact, the term originated in Japan although the head spa concept is related to ancient Ayurveda philosophy.
The “Head Spa” is a place offering services to maintain the health of your scalp and hair. It usually includes a scalp and hair analysis, shampoo, scalp massage, hair treatment, neck/shoulder/décolleté massage, and hair brow.
The “scalp industry” is expected to grow into a 500 billion yen market in Japan. More men and women are concerned with hair damage and hair loss. It is caused not only by chemicals (coloring, perm, etc) and UV, but also by mental stress, food, and lack of sleep. In fact, the head is closer to the brain so it is easily damaged by stress. That’s where the “head spa” plays a major role.
Professional scalp treatments can increase blood circulation to the hair follicles, increase relaxation, improve brain function (memory, focus, etc ), decrease stress, condition the scalp, and boost the strength of the hair roots. Using oil also conditions the hair shaft and roots lessening the chances of brittleness, hair strand breakage, and split ends. Touch massage also increases the production of “feel good” chemicals.
Although existing spas and salons are incorporating “scalp treatment”, more “head spas” (exclusively offering head and scalp treatments) have opened up and it is becoming a huge business.
Go visit the natural head spa “Maana”, one of the pioneers of the head spa, located in heart of Harajuku. Maana only uses natural products and provides comprehensive and professional head and scalp treatments. They are also known for its Henna treatment, which dramatically improves hair conditions.
All of Maana’s head care specialists are certified by the Japan Hair Science Association and hold hair stylist licenses. (Click here to read an interview with the Maana owner). Most of their customers are repeaters.
Head spa boom may arrive soon in the U.S. once people realize how scalp and hair treatment greatly affect one’s health and get addicted!
